Harbour Sea School – Winter Training

Free Winter Workshop

The winter season is the perfect time to improve your knowledge, skills and obtain a new qualification.  Our free workshop on Wednesday, 13th November, is open to all Parkstone Bay berth holders and will focus on: ‘Kit we suggest on board to keep us safe – safety blankets and stocking filler suggestions’.  The workshop will take place in South Deep Cafe, from 6pm and the bar will be open for refreshments through the evening.  If you would like to attend, please let us know by emailing info@harbourseaschool.com.

Harbour Sea School is an RYA Recognised training centre, which has been guiding Parkstone Bay berth holders for the past 10 years in how to stay safe on the water, avoid accidents and optimise their manouvering skills.  We are thrilled to be working closely now with Dom and Sarah from Dorset Marine Training to broaden the range of courses on offer to berth holders.

“We are always happy to sit down over a coffee and formulate a training plan to achieve your aims.  We really want you to enjoy your berthing at Parkstone Bay and stay safe and calm out of the water so please just let us know how we can help.”

Our classroom benefits from the best view in the marina, located at the fuel station and provides a perfect base to take on board new skills and obtain relevant qualifications.  To book a course or for more information on what is on offer, please email info@harbourseaschool.com or pop into the office for a chat.

Here are a few options for you to consider over the winter season:

Winter refit offer:  Dom and Sarah are happy to join any Parkstone Bay resident on their boat to look through the kit we recommend on board as part of our basic boating courses.  We can check what you have already, show you extra bits and share ideas for the coming season (and possibly ideas for Christmas presents to keep your loved ones safe).

VHF Radio Courses:  All our boats have VHF radios on board and it is important that you know how to use these properly.  Not only will it enable you to make a call in an emergency but it will also enable you to listen out for ships and ferries moving around the harbour to ensure you are not meeting them at the harbour entrance, to call other boats if you have friends out and to speak to marinas if you wish to pop in for lunch.  Remember it’s important more than one person on board the boat knows how it works and it’s actually a legal requirement that one person on board has a ‘license’ to operate it.

Throughout the winter we have scheduled courses on site here at Parkstone Bay and these have both weekends and weekdays available (One day Course – 28th Oct, 3rd Nov, 23rd Nov, 30th Nov, 6th Dec)

RYA Dayskipper and Yachtmaster Theory Courses:  For the keener amongst you who wish to progress through formal channels we are running theory courses over the autumn/winter time.   There are still plenty of days to enjoy afloat before we think too much about winter but now is the time to get booked in if you’re thinking of either of these courses.   The Day Skipper dates are not set but planned for February/ March time so please contact us to express interest.  The Yachtmaster Theory is 18th-23rd Nov and currently has two spaces remaining.

Navigation training:  We have been working hard to provide some further theory training to complement the topics introduced at your RYA Powerboat Level 2 course and now have a couple of options for you.

Option 1 – The RYA Essential Navigation course for those who want a basic introduction to safety and navigation afloat.   This can be undertaken online or in the classroom.

Option 2 – Our own inhouse course provided by our Instructors to provide an inhouse course that will be loosely based on the Essential Navigation course but instead focus on local charts and local trips and the safety kit you have on board rather than generic ones.  We are just looking at dates now so let us know if you’re interested.  Course places limited to 6 people.
