The Harbour Sea School is a leading RYA training centre situated in the largest natural harbour in Europe, Poole Harbour. Our instructors are highly qualified in providing rewarding and informative lessons whilst being exciting and never repetitive. The Sea School’s partnership the Sandbanks Boat Club means our boat learners have access to a large selection of boats. These can be used in our 11 training courses such as the RYA Powerboat Course in Level 1 and 2, Coastal Skipper (Power), and Yacht-Master (Power).
It can be easy to get swept away with excitement when boating. It’s important to know the proper procedures to ensure smooth sailing and avoid risks if something happens out at sea. Our RYA First Aid course is recommended for leisure and industry boat users as it’s vital to gain knowledge that will protect you and others from being injured at sea. The course takes one day to complete and will earn an RYA First Aid certificate and a St Johns Ambulance First Aid handbook to bring with you on your boating adventures!
We offer four powerboat course types in our Harbour Sea School, they include Level 1, Level 2, Intermediate, and Advanced – which course are you interested in? Read more about each below:
RYA Powerboat Course Level 1
Level 1 is an introductory course to learn boat handling and safety equipment when boating, the one day course consists of both practical and theoretical learning. The course content includes boat launching and recovery, leaving and coming alongside, being towed, boat and crew preparation, picking up and securing to a mooring buoy, and boat handling. After the course, you will have learnt successfully how to drive a powerboat under supervision from your instructor.
RYA Powerboat Course Level 2
Level 2 is a continuation of the Level 1 course and is The Harbour Sea School’s most popular course. Targeted towards beginners this two-day course covers all aspects of powerboating, that will give you the knowledge needed to safely use your powerboat. The course topics include launch and recovery, boat handling, securing to a buoy, leaving and coming alongside, anchoring, close quarter handling, planning speed manoeuvres, and man overboard recovery. After course completion you will be self-sufficient in good weather conditions, to use your boat unsupervised.
Intermediate builds on the knowledge previously learnt from the RYA Level 2 Powerboat course. Boating enthusiasts who are aiming to drive larger and more powerful powerboats would benefit from this particular course, as our instructors use larger boats for training lessons. During the two days of practical and theoretical learning, you will cover the topics of daytime navigation skills, passage planning, use of plotting instruments, GPS and electronic navigation. The results of the course ensure learners being able to navigate a powerboat on coastal passages during the day.
The Advanced RYA Powerboat course is our highest level of training for our Harbour Boating School clients and promises learners the ability to navigate a powerboat on coastal passages during day or night. To take this two-day course you must have RYA Intermediate course qualifications as this is a continuation of previous learning at Harbour Sea School. The main course content includes Skippering techniques for coastal passages including night pilotage, which enables learners to learn the expert skills of driving their boats during darkened conditions with confidence.
